PU rigid foam is a highly cross-linked, closed cell, thermoset plastic with a low density.Its low thermal conductivity contributes to the material’s outstanding insulation properties. saving energy is one of today's prime objectives,The building and construction industry is the biggest customer for rigid foam as a thermal insulating material. Owing to PU rigid foam's low thermal conductivity, it is possible to save more than half of the average heating energy consumed, particularly in older, poorly insulated buildings, also to ensure the cost-efficient construction.  Insulating panels can be used from the basement to the attic.

The foam itself is made by mixing batches of chemicals that are provided in separate drums. The chemicals must be kept separate until they are mixed and the chemical reaction can begin. The two separate drums or canisters have different chemicals in them, and are referred to as the “A” side and “B” side.

A-side: The A-side is typically a 50/50 mixture of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI), or MDI-based diisocyanate. B-side: The B-side is a polyol resin blend — the principal ingredient being polyol — and smaller amounts of amine and/or metal catalyst, blowing agent, surfactant and flame retardant.

The drums may be color-coded red or black for the A-side, and blue or another color for the B-side.

Polyurethane is a resilient, flexible and durable manufactured material that can take the place of paint, cotton, rubber, metal or wood in thousands of applications across virtually all fields. It can be hard like fiberglass, squishy like upholstery foam, protective like varnish, bouncy like rubber or sticky like glue. Since its invention during the 1940s, polyurethane has been used in a wide range of items, from baby toys to airplane wings, and it continues to be adapted for contemporary technology.

 

Polyurethane have below outstanding advantages:

 

1. Abrasion resistantParts made of polyurethane will often outwear other materials by a margin of 5 to 50/one when severe abrasion is a factor. It has been proven to be vastly superior to rubber plastics and metal in many applications.2. Oil and solvent resistantPolyurethane has excellent resistance to oils, solvents, fats, greases and gasoline.

 

3. Load bearing capacityPolyurethane has a higher load-bearing capacity than any conventional rubber. Because of this characteristic, it is an ideal material for load wheels, heavy duty couplings, metal-forming pads, shock pads, expansion joints and machine mounts.

 

4. Tear resistantTear-strength ranges between 500-100 Ibs./linear inch, which is far superior to rubbers. As a result, urethane is often used as drive belts, diaphragms, roll covers, cutting pads, gaskets and chute liners.

 

5. Weather resistantPolyurethane has outstanding resistance to oxygen, ozone, sunlight and general weather conditions.

 

6. Excellent noise abatement propertiesThe hard urethanes are now being used as gears in products where engineers desire sound reduction. The soft urethanes are used to replace rubbers for improved sound/vibration dampening.

 

7. Flex-LifeMost formulations offer extremely high flex-life and can be expected to outlast other elastomer materials where this feature is an important requirement. Dust boots, bellows, diaphragms, belts, couplings and similar products are made from urethane for this reason.

 

8. Electrical propertiesPolyurethane has excellent electrical insulating properties and is used successfully in many moulded wire and cable harness assemblies.

 

9. Heat and cold resistantContinuous use above 225°F is not recommended nor is urethane recommended in hot water over 175°F. At low temperatures, polyurethane will remain flexible down to -90°F. A gradual stiffening will occur at 0°F, but will not become pronounced until much lower temperatures are obtained.
